Lionel Messi is dealing with a recurring hamstring injury sustained during Inter Miami’s preseason preparations for the 2026 MLS season. The club is providing the Argentine superstar with comprehensive care.
Messi suffered the injury during Inter Miami’s 2-2 friendly draw against Ecuador’s Barcelona SC on Sunday, February 8th. Despite the setback, Messi managed to score a goal and provide an assist in the match.
The forward was substituted before the finish of the first half after experiencing discomfort in his left leg.

Inter Miami was originally scheduled to face Peruvian side Independiente del Valle on February 13th, but that match has been postponed until February 26th due to Messi’s absence. It is likely Messi will remain sidelined for that contest as well.
CBS Sports reports that Messi sustained a hamstring injury in his left leg. He previously suffered a similar injury last season, which caused him to miss four MLS games.
“Messi experienced an issue with the hamstring muscle in his left leg. He will gradually return to training depending on his clinical and functional progress,” a team statement read.
This isn’t the first time Messi has battled a hamstring injury with Inter Miami, as he missed 13 games with a similar issue during his debut season in 2023.
Inter Miami will take a cautious approach with Messi’s recovery. The team’s medical staff are reportedly in communication with the Argentinian national team, hoping to have Messi fit for the 2026 World Cup.
There is currently no official timeline for Messi’s return to the field. Inter Miami will kick off the 2026 MLS season against LAFC on February 21st, and will still face Independiente del Valle five days later.
