DOC NYC Film Festival Announces 2024 Lineup, Featuring Trump Lawsuit Documentary
The 16th annual DOC NYC film festival, a leading showcase for non-fiction films, will run from November 12–20 at venues across New York City, with films continuing to be available online through November 30.
This year’s festival boasts over 115 feature-length documentaries, including 30 world premieres and 34 U.S. premieres, spanning a diverse range of subjects. The festival will open with the U.S. premiere of Christopher Nelius’s “Whistle,” a film celebrating the art of musical whistling, and close with the NYC premiere of Ivy Meeropol’s “Ask E. Jean,” which examines writer E. Jean Carroll’s legal battles with Donald Trump following his denial of her sexual assault allegations – a case that has sparked national conversation about accountability and defamation.
Two centerpiece screenings will highlight the work of prominent figures: “Steal This Story, Please!” a profile of Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, and “The Merchants of Joy,” a look at New York City’s Christmas tree trade. Other notable premieres include “The Trial of Alec Baldwin,” Rory Kennedy’s documentary about the actor’s involvement in a fatal shooting on a film set, and “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” a crypto expose by Ben McKenzie. The festival also features a robust shorts competition, qualifying films for Academy and BAFTA consideration. For a comprehensive list of films and events, visit docnyc.net.
“In this period of rapid change, DOC NYC is proud to present a collection of films that speak to urgent global, national, and personal matters,” said festival artistic director Jaie Laplante. The festival will also award $50,000 in grants to support social issue documentaries and related nonprofit organizations, furthering the impact of these important films. Documentary films play a crucial role in informing public discourse and driving social change, as noted by the International Documentary Association.
Festival organizers stated that filmmakers are expected to attend screenings and participate in Q&A sessions, offering audiences direct engagement with the creators of these impactful stories.
