A beloved Colombian bakery, Industrias de alimentos Don Jacobo S.A.S., is facing closure following a recent decision by the Superintendencia de Sociedades to initiate a judicial liquidation process. The move comes after the company, a Santander region staple known for its ‘La Genovesa’ dessert, was unable to overcome meaningful financial challenges adn a failed reorganization plan. In response to the news, businesses throughout the santander region are stepping up with promotions and support to demonstrate solidarity with the struggling pastry mainstay.
Colombian pastry mainstay Industrias de Alimentos Don Jacobo S.A.S. has been admitted to a simplified judicial liquidation process, according to a recent order from the Superintendencia de Sociedades. The move comes after the company was determined unable to continue operations or meet its financial obligations.
The Superintendencia’s decision followed an assessment of Don Jacobo’s economic and administrative standing, which had been under supervision. Authorities determined the company failed to meet the terms of a prior reorganization plan and lacked the financial capacity to sustain its business.
The liquidation process was initiated at the request of the company’s legal representative, with authorization from the General Assembly of Shareholders.
During its evaluation, the Superintendencia concluded that there were no viable options for rescuing the business or satisfying its creditors, making closure unavoidable.

Regional Support Amidst Crisis
Following the announcement, several companies from the Santander region publicly expressed their support for Don Jacobo, demonstrating regional solidarity and recognizing the company’s long-standing presence in the local business community.
Gloriosa, a regional chain, was among the first to respond, launching a joint initiative to support local brands. From January 16 to January 18, the promotion offers customers who spend at least $16,000 at Pastelería Don Jacobo – presenting either a physical or digital receipt – a complimentary classic hamburger at participating Gloriosa locations. The offer is limited to one hamburger per receipt.
The decision highlights the interconnectedness of local businesses and the impact of one company’s struggles on the wider regional economy.
More Businesses Join the Effort
Restaurant El Garaje also joined the initiative, offering complimentary mini genovesas – a traditional Colombian pastry – from Don Jacobo at its locations, under the slogan “Santandereano apoya Santandereano” (Santander supports Santander).
Meanwhile, Lavalú, a shoe cleaning service, announced that customers who spend a minimum of $15,000 at Don Jacobo and present a receipt will receive a $5,000 voucher for its products and services.
Another notable promotion comes from Negrón, a chocolate and flower shop, which is encouraging customers to purchase the company’s iconic ‘La Genovesa’ dessert. Customers presenting a receipt will receive a strawberry or a chocolate bomb, a promotion valid until January 20.
Perre H, a fast-food restaurant, and Girona Picniceventos, a tourist establishment in Girón, have also added incentives for customers supporting Don Jacobo or participating in these solidarity actions.
Social media users have widely interpreted the initiative as a demonstration of unity and support from the Santander business community, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between local entrepreneurs during challenging economic times.
