The Dongfeng Mage, known as Aeolus Haohan in some markets, is targeting the highly competitive C-segment SUV category. The vehicle debuted in China in 2023 and represents a significant step for the automaker as it expands its global reach. Despite being positioned as a more affordable option, the Mage faces stiff competition from both domestic and international manufacturers.
Even as the brand initially entered European markets with limited fanfare, the Mage is now available in Hungary through KocsiGuru dealerships at a promotional price of 9,940,000 Forints. This single trim level includes a comprehensive feature set, with no additional cost for the panoramic roof or color options – a strategy common among new entrants to attract buyers with a complete package.
Modern Design Aesthetics
The exterior design of the Mage aims for a contemporary aesthetic, featuring a coupe-like roofline and a bold stance. While the overall design language shares similarities with other modern SUVs, the vehicle incorporates unique elements, moving away from traditional Asian design cues seen in models like the U-Tour. The design team also avoided the more extreme styling of the Dongfeng Forthing T5 Evo, opting for a more universally appealing look with hints of American influence.
The front fascia bears a resemblance to the current Skoda Octavia, while the rear profile evokes the Porsche Cayenne Coupe. This design connection is not surprising, given Dongfeng’s partnerships within the Volkswagen Group. Notable details include the shark-nose grille, integrated LED headlights, and a distinctive LED light bar at the rear. The dual exhaust outlets, while largely cosmetic, contribute to the vehicle’s sporty appearance, and the flush-mounted door handles add a touch of sophistication.
Inside, the cabin offers a comfortable and well-appointed space. Entry is effortless, though taller passengers should be mindful of the dashboard’s edge. The vehicle provides ample headroom and legroom for passengers, despite its relatively compact exterior dimensions. The seating is among the better offerings from Chinese automakers, providing adequate support for longer journeys.
The ventilation graphics and the mirror menu are similar to Tesla’s, and the 360-degree camera offers a high-quality image.
The infotainment system, controlled via a large touchscreen, is intuitive and responsive. While not offering a fully digital instrument cluster, the system provides essential information and integrates seamlessly with smartphone connectivity. The air conditioning controls, reminiscent of Tesla’s interface, are easy to use, and the 360-degree camera system provides a clear and comprehensive view of the surroundings.
The design here is more significant than practicality, but it doesn’t proceed overboard. There are several useful storage compartments.
The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 204 horsepower and is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 1,550 kg SUV feels nimble, and the 305 Nm of torque delivers brisk acceleration. Careful throttle control prevents wheelspin on wet surfaces, and the transmission shifts smoothly and efficiently.
Braking is equally well-modulated, allowing for confident and controlled deceleration. The 8.5-second 0-60 mph sprint isn’t particularly exhilarating, but the Mage doesn’t feel underpowered, even with passengers. The engine is audible, particularly at highway speeds, where road noise is also more noticeable. The suspension is tuned for comfort, absorbing bumps and providing a smooth ride, which is particularly welcome given the current road conditions.
The design incorporates elements reminiscent of the current Skoda Octavia and the Porsche Cayenne Coupe.
Combined fuel economy is rated at 7.2 liters per 100 kilometers, but this figure was only achievable at a constant speed of 90 km/h. During testing, with a mix of city and highway driving, the average fuel consumption was 9.7 liters per 100 kilometers. The Dongfeng Mage represents a compelling option in the crowded SUV market, offering a blend of style, comfort, and value.
