A routine eye exam potentially saved the life of a 51-year-old mother of six, highlighting the critical importance of regular vision checkups. Tammy Jackson is now advocating for increased awareness of eye health after discovering a concerning symptom during a simple, everyday task.
Jackson first noticed a fleeting “light flicker” while making tea, initially dismissing it as insignificant. However, when she woke up the next morning, she found a black spot had developed in the center of her right eye. “It was like wet paint had been smeared on my eye,” she recalled.
The spot was accompanied by vision blurring, swelling, discharge, and headaches. Jackson stated she had previously only experienced “lazy eye,” birthmarks, and eye strain from computer use, and had no unusual findings during routine eye exams.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, Jackson sought care at a local Boots Opticians branch. There, she was informed that she had swelling in her right eye, potentially indicating retinal detachment or “something else suspicious.” She was immediately referred to Great Western Hospital.
At the hospital, scans revealed a diagnosis that would change Jackson’s life. While details of the diagnosis were not immediately available, the quick action of Boots Opticians proved crucial. “It might sound dramatic, but they saved my eye, and potentially my life,” Jackson said. “If they hadn’t reacted so quickly to what they saw, this could have been missed.”
Early detection of eye problems is vital, as many conditions have no noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular eye exams can identify these issues before they lead to serious vision loss or other health complications.
Jackson hopes her story will encourage others to prioritize their eye health. “The most significant thing is: if you need to get your eyes tested, get them tested. It’s really not worth delaying. It’s a very easy procedure, but it can save your life,” she emphasized. She added that if her experience prompts even one person to schedule a checkup, it will have been worthwhile.
