An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 struck the northwestern part of Chiba Prefecture late Thursday night, shaking parts of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and other surrounding areas.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at approximately 11:53 p.m. Local time on April 23, 2026. Its epicenter was located about 70 kilometers underground in northwestern Chiba.
The tremor registered a maximum seismic intensity of 2 on Japan’s scale in several locations, including Shibuya Ward in Tokyo, as well as the Kanagawa, Asahi, Midori and Seya wards of Yokohama City and the Kawasaki Ward in Kawasaki City.
Numerous other areas across the Kanto region experienced weaker shaking, with intensity level 1 reported in parts of Ibaraki, Tochigi, Saitama and additional wards of Tokyo, including Chiyoda, Chuo, Minato, Shinjuku, Bunkyo, Taito, Koto, Shinagawa, Meguro, Ota, Setagaya, Nakano, Suginami, Toshima, Kita, Arakawa, Itabashi, Nerima, Adachi, Katsushika and Edogawa.
No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
The affected area, where shaking of intensity 1 or higher was felt, encompasses a population of approximately 26.3 million people. Of that total, about 6.34 million residents are aged 65 or older, representing roughly 24.1 percent of the population in the impacted zone.
