With the addition of Mise, the Latvian team will consist of 68 athletes – the largest representation the nation has ever sent to a Winter Olympics.

Additional scrutiny of Mise’s eligibility was required due to his previous dual citizenship with Latvia and Russia. Earlier this week, both the LOK and the Latvian Biathlon Federation (LBF) were hesitant to comment on whether further review was needed regarding Mise’s past Russian citizenship.

According to the LOK, a specially formed working group, delegated by the LOK Executive Committee, thoroughly evaluated all available information regarding Mise. The evaluation process included interviews with the athlete himself, information gathered from the relevant sports federation, and analysis of publicly available data and his social media activity. The group assessed potential ties to the aggressor state, citizenship aspects, social media posts, publicity risks, funding, and political stance. Based on this detailed assessment, the working group recommended to the LOK Executive Committee to approve the athlete’s inclusion in the Latvian Olympic delegation, finding no justifiable risks to his participation in the Games.

The evaluation confirmed that Mise is of Russian ethnicity and his parents still reside in Russia, but he renounced his dual citizenship several years ago and is now solely a citizen of the Republic of Latvia. Last year, while visiting family, he received a humanitarian visa issued in special circumstances. Following this visit, the LBF discussed his actions with the athlete and urged him to be particularly mindful of his behavior and public communication, given his status as a Latvian athlete.

Since then, and following the warning, Mise has been diligent in monitoring his actions and public statements to avoid creating grounds for false or misleading narratives. He has refrained from traveling to Russia and declined interviews with Russian media during international competitions.

Mise recently received an award from the International Biathlon Union (IBU) for his achievements and for promoting the sport in a climate where athletes from aggressor nations are barred from competition, demonstrating both professionalism and responsible conduct as a Latvian athlete, the LOK noted.

“We approached this matter carefully and evaluated various aspects, allowing us to make a well-founded and confident decision. Throughout the interview process, the athlete communicated with us in Latvian, and we observed no actions or statements that would indicate a positive attitude towards the aggressor state. We were assured that his family fully supports his participation in the Games as part of the Latvian delegation,” said Jānis Liepiņš, Vice President of the LOK and representative of the authorized working group, as quoted by the LOK.

The LOK has also approved short track speed skater Reinis Bērziņš and figure skater Fedirs Kuļišs for participation, following additional medical evaluations.

Latvia will be represented in nine sports, with Latvian athletes competing in 29 disciplines, four of which are contingent on results achieved during the Olympic Games.

Latvian athletes will compete in biathlon, both men’s and women’s events; bobsleigh in two-man and four-man competitions; figure skating for men; cross-country skiing for both men and women; ice hockey in the men’s competition; alpine skiing for men and women in various disciplines; luge in singles and doubles events for both men and women, as well as the mixed relay; skeleton for men; and short track speed skating for men in three disciplines.

The LOK stated that the final delegation roster could still be subject to change following final decisions by the LOK Executive Committee this weekend.

LOK President Raimonds Lazdiņš highlighted that participating in the Milan-Cortina Olympic Winter Games with the largest Latvian delegation to date is a testament to the development of the Latvian sports system.

“This delegation size is the result of long-term planning, active daily work, and close cooperation. It’s not an achievement of one decision or one year – it’s the result of constant dialogue, a dialogue between the sports sector and state institutions,” Lazdiņš said.

In addition to the 65 athletes, the delegation includes coaches, support staff, doctors and physiotherapists, media and content teams, delegation leadership, and officials, totaling 137 people.
