Milano Cortina, Italy – Dreams of a podium finish in snowboard cross at the 2026 Winter Olympics came to an end for the Spanish team on Thursday, February 12th, as both Lucas Eguibar and Álvaro Romero were eliminated from contention.

Eguibar, a veteran competing in his fourth Olympic Games after appearances in Sochi 2014, PyeongChang 2018, and Beijing 2022, advanced from the round of 16 but was unable to continue his run in the quarterfinals. The Donostia native, a 2021 World Champion and 2015 Crystal Globe winner, had overcome a recent fall in a World Cup event in China and was aiming for a medal after previously achieving seventh-place finishes in Sochi and Beijing.

Romero, making his Olympic debut at just over twenty years old, showed promise but finished third in his heat alongside Eguibar and was unable to progress further in the competition. The pair competed in a discipline defined by speed, contact, and unpredictability, where experience and quick reactions are crucial.

The elimination of both riders means Spain will leave the snowboard cross event without a medal. Eguibar’s experience and ability to read the course made him a strong contender, but luck wasn’t on his side.

Despite the disappointing result, Eguibar’s career remains decorated with numerous podium finishes on the international circuit. He will undoubtedly look to build on this experience as he continues his career.
