Latvian biathlete Estere Volfa is entering the international spotlight as the Winter Olympics approach, following a dominant performance at the IBU Junior Cup in Madona this weekend. The 20-year-old athlete won two of three competitions, signaling a potential changing of the guard within the Latvian national team. Volfa and seven other Latvian athletes are preparing to compete at the Games, scheduled to begin February 6th in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy [[1]].

Estere Volfa dominated at the IBU Junior Cup in Madona, Latvia this weekend, winning two of three biathlon competitions and consistently finishing over a minute ahead of her nearest rivals. The impressive performance comes as the Winter Olympics approach, and the 20-year-old athlete expressed her excitement for the atmosphere of the quadrennial event.

The junior biathletes faced two sprint races and one mass start competition – a field of 60 athletes, significantly larger than the usual 30. Volfa nearly secured victory in the first sprint, but a costly miss on the final shooting range denied her the top spot.

Volfa attributes her success in Latvia and on the World Cup circuit this season to her dedicated training regimen.

“I feel in the best [physical] shape I’ve ever been in. That’s definitely because I’ve trained more thoroughly than in any other year.”

She credits a high-quality summer training plan and a healthy season free from illness for her current form.

Competing against seasoned Latvian national team leader Baiba Bendika in adult competitions, Volfa has shown the ability to challenge and even surpass her compatriot. Meanwhile, Elza Bleidele and Annija Keita Sabule have demonstrated improved shooting accuracy, an area where Bendika has struggled this year.

This shift in performance signals a changing of the guard in Latvian women’s biathlon. Volfa, however, doesn’t feel the pressure of this transition. “I don’t really feel it,” she said. “Everyone is focused on their own performance, as this is primarily an individual sport.”

With less than three weeks remaining until the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Volfa admits to feeling a palpable sense of anticipation.

“To be honest, I can’t wait to get there.

I really want to experience it… It doesn’t quite feel real yet. I hope to get that feeling once I’m actually there. I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere,” Volfa stated.

Volfa isn’t setting specific placement goals for the Olympics, instead focusing on maximizing her own performance. “I just want to show my best side and give everything I’ve got. If I’m happy knowing I’ve done everything I can, then that will be the best result,” the 20-year-old athlete emphasized.

CONTEXT:

The Winter Olympics will be held across a wide area of Northern Italy from February 6th to February 22nd, encompassing six venues – Milan, Antholz, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Bormio, Livigno, and Predazzo-Tesero. Biathlon competitions will take place in Antholz, with Latvia fielding a team of eight athletes.
