Lyon continued their dominant form in the competition, earning a 2-1 victory over Go Ahead Eagles of the Netherlands in their sixth match. The French side has won all of their games in the group stage this season, fueled by quick goals from Portuguese forward Alfonso Moreira (3′) and Dutch midfielder Milan Smits (6′). Pavel Šulc answered for Go Ahead Eagles in the 11th minute.
Lyon currently leads their group with 15 points, holding a tiebreaker over Midtjylland of Denmark, who also clinched a playoff berth with a 1-0 win against Genk of Belgium thanks to a 17th-minute goal from South Korean forward Go-sung Cho.
Aston Villa:
Aston Villa claimed their third consecutive win, defeating Basel of Switzerland 2-1. Ivory Coast’s Evan Guessand opened the scoring for the hosts in the 12th minute, but Flavius Daniliuc leveled the score for Basel in the 34th. Belgian substitute Yuri Tielemans then secured the victory for Aston Villa in the 53rd minute.
Aston Villa sits third in the group with 15 points, level with Lyon, and is now guaranteed at least a playoff spot.
Real Betis:
Real Betis of Spain also booked their place in the playoff round with a convincing 3-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia. An own goal from Sergi Domínguez (31′) opened the scoring for Betis, followed by goals from Rodrigo Riquelme (34′) and Brazilian forward Anthony (38′). Niko Galičić scored a late consolation goal for Dinamo Zagreb in the 89th minute.
The Andalusian club has won its last three matches in the competition, bouncing back from a 3-5 defeat to Barcelona in La Liga five days prior.
Freiburg:
Freiburg of Germany advanced to the playoff round after a 1-0 win against Salzburg of Austria, who played the majority of the match with ten men following a 38th-minute red card to Serbian forward Petar Ratkov. Austrian midfielder Philipp Lienhart scored the decisive goal for Freiburg in the 50th minute, lifting them to fifth place and securing a playoff berth with 14 points.
