Asunción, Paraguay – A key figure in the fallout from Brazil’s 2022 election crisis was apprehended Friday attempting to flee the country, underscoring the continued legal and political repercussions following the contested vote. Silvinei Vasques, former director of the Federal Highway Police, was arrested in Paraguay after breaching his house arrest and allegedly attempting to travel to El Salvador with falsified documents. The arrest comes weeks after Vasques received a lengthy prison sentence alongside ex-President Jair Bolsonaro for conspiring to overturn the election results, a case that has shaken confidence in Brazil’s democratic institutions[[2]] and highlighted tensions within the nation[[1]].
A former head of Brazil’s highway police, already serving house arrest for his involvement in the attempt to overturn the 2022 election results, was arrested in Paraguay early Friday, December 26, 2025. The arrest highlights the ongoing fallout from the failed effort to subvert Brazil’s democratic process following a bitterly contested presidential vote.
Silvinei Vasques, the former director of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), had been sentenced to 24 years and six months in prison on December 16 for his role in the attempted coup. The conviction stemmed from actions taken after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated then-President Jair Bolsonaro in the October 2022 election.
Brazilian media reports indicate that Vasques, 50, breached the terms of his house arrest in the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, by removing his electronic monitoring ankle bracelet and crossing the border into Paraguay by car. He had been under house arrest since 2023.
A source within the Federal Police, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to AFP that Vasques was apprehended at an airport. According to Brazilian press, the arrest took place at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, near Asunción, as he attempted to board a flight to El Salvador using falsified documents. Brazilian authorities had previously issued alerts to Paraguay, as well as neighboring countries including Colombia and Argentina.
The Supreme Court also convicted Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, to 27 years in prison alongside other former aides, including Vasques, for conspiring to remain in power after losing the election to Lula. The case has raised concerns about the fragility of democratic institutions in the region.
