Ferdinand Alexander Porsche
FA Porsche and Porsche Design
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, a key figure in the iconic Porsche brand, was born on December 11, 1935, and raised in an environment steeped in technology and innovation. He spent much of his youth at the Schüttgut estate in Zell am See. From a young age, Porsche developed a passion for design, briefly studying at the prestigious Ulm School of Design before beginning an internship in the modeling department at Porsche in 1957.
In March 1961, this department was spun off from the body design division and placed under the direction of “Studio” FA Porsche. Under the leadership of the young Porsche, the 901/991, the 804 Formula 1 car, and the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS were created. This period marked a significant era of design innovation for the company. Following the departure of all family members from Porsche KG as it transitioned into a public limited company, he and his brother Hans-Peter founded their own company in Stuttgart in 1972, naming it Porsche Design. This move allowed them to continue pursuing their design vision independently.
Two years later, he relocated the design studio headquarters to Zell am See, overlooking the Schüttgut estate. Over the following decades, he designed numerous classic accessories – including mechanical wristwatches, eyewear, lighters, and pipes – as well as writing instruments, all achieving global recognition under the Porsche Design brand. Simultaneously, he and his team designed a wide range of industrial products, household appliances, and consumer goods for renowned international clients under the brand Design by FA Porsche. The expansion into diverse product categories demonstrated the versatility of the Porsche Design aesthetic. FA Porsche passed away on April 5, 2012, in Salzburg.
Today, the design studio in Zell am See, now known as Studio FA Porsche in honor of its founder, remains the heart of the Porsche Design brand. Staying true to FA Porsche’s vision, all designs continue to follow a timeless and functional design philosophy, prioritizing enduring quality over fleeting trends. This commitment to lasting design principles continues to influence the brand’s identity and product development.
