These contrasting events underscore the enduring value-both artistic and monetary-placed on creations from the House of Fabergé,of which fewer than 50 Imperial eggs were ever made [[1]].

A Fabergé egg has been sold at auction in London for a record price exceeding €26 million (approximately $28.3 million), while a man in New Zealand attempted a peculiar theft involving a smaller piece from the same renowned jeweler. The contrasting incidents highlight the enduring allure – and sometimes, the desperation – surrounding these iconic symbols of Russian imperial craftsmanship.

The 8.2-centimeter-tall crystal egg, adorned with 4,500 diamonds, was purchased by an anonymous bidder, according to British broadcaster BBC, citing auction house Christie’s. It was originally commissioned in 1913 by Tsar Nicholas II as a gift for his mother.

The sale price surpasses the previous record for a Fabergé egg – more than €10 million (approximately $10.9 million) set in 2007. Representatives from the House of Fabergé emphasized that the auction reaffirms the significance of these masterpieces. A total of 50 eggs were created for the Russian Imperial family, and the egg sold is one of only seven remaining in private hands; the others are held by institutions or museums, or have been lost.

Meanwhile, in Auckland, New Zealand, a 32-year-old man attempted to steal a miniature Fabergé egg – a pendant – from a jewelry store by swallowing it. According to police reports, the man took the pendant, valued at approximately $20,000 (approximately €17,150), and ingested it before authorities could intervene.

Police announced Wednesday that they have not yet recovered the stolen item. The suspect is currently under observation by law enforcement, awaiting the natural passage of the pendant. The incident underscores the lengths to which individuals will go to acquire valuable items, even at significant personal risk.
