A highly anticipated reboot of Fable is on the horizon, breathing new life into the beloved RPG trilogy. The reimagining, spearheaded by Playground Games, has captured the attention of the series’ original creator, Peter Molyneux. Molyneux recently shared his emotional reaction to the gameplay reveal and offered insights into the strengths and areas for improvement in the new installment.
Molyneux örömmel fogadta az új Fable előzetesét, de szerinte vizuálisan steril még
Playground Games is undertaking a significant challenge with the complete overhaul of Fable. Previously known for the Forza Horizon franchise, the studio’s move into a large-scale, open-world, third-person RPG represents a substantial shift. Initial previews were met with cautious optimism, but the gameplay demonstration showcased during the January Xbox Developer Direct offered a more compelling look at a game that appears faithful to the spirit of the original trilogy.
This prompted a response from Peter Molyneux, the original creator of Fable and former head of Lionhead Studios. Molyneux told IGN about his reaction to the game presented by Playground Games.
“When I was watching the Fable trailer, I just felt myself tearing up”, Molyneux revealed. “I recognize that I could probably be slaughtered for saying that, but I am someone who cries frequently and I felt incredibly emotional, and the reason I felt emotional was: Baszki! This thing that we created, it’s going to live, it’s going to carry on. This world, which we loved creating so much, and other people loved, has a life.”
Molyneux also praised Playground Games’ decision to reboot the first Fable game rather than attempt to continue the narrative of the existing trilogy. He also highlighted the clever choice to have the protagonist’s family turned to stone early in the story, a departure from their fate in the original game. While largely positive, Molyneux did offer some critique, particularly regarding the game’s visual presentation.
“If I was critical, which I consider you seek me to be, there was a slight antiseptic feel about it,” Molyneux stated. “But they’ve got months and months to build in that character and that grime that you expect from this world. I never thought Fable would be clean, with every angle sharp and defined. It’s more chaotic. It’s more like old England probably was, where there weren’t straight lines, the place is more wrinkled, and the buckles on people’s belts are ridiculously big, and the boots and hands are ridiculously big given that that’s part of the character. So there’s a little bit more of that character that I’d probably foolishly and ridiculously request for.”
Nagyot vállal az új Fable, de Molyneux sem hagyta el teljesen Albion világát
Playground Games has several months to refine the game ahead of its anticipated release in the fall. The game already appears ambitious, featuring a vast open world, numerous activities, engaging combat, and a robust progression system, promising an immersive RPG experience. The reboot signals a renewed interest in expansive, story-driven RPGs on current-generation consoles.
Although Lionhead Studios is no longer operating and the rights to Fable now reside with Xbox, Molyneux hasn’t entirely left the world of Albion. His latest project, Masters of Albion, developed with his studio 22cans, is slated for release. As the title suggests, this game is set within the Fable universe, but it’s not a direct Fable sequel. It’s a new god game, reminiscent of Molyneux’s earlier titles like Dungeon Keeper and Black and White, with a touch of Fable influence. Masters of Albion will launch on PC on April 22nd. Playground Games’ new Fable game is expected on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in Fall 2026.
