Pokémon GO players will soon have another opportunity to catch the highly sought-after Legendary Pokémon, Mewtwo, after a long wait.
The popular Pokémon was last available in the game in July 2022, though its Crypto/Shadow form appeared briefly in March 2024. Fans have been requesting another chance to add Mewtwo to their Pokédex ever since, and that opportunity is now on the horizon.
Details regarding this summer’s GO Fest celebrations were revealed at a press event in Tokyo, one of three in-person events preceding the global GO Fest festivities. Graphics presented at the event confirmed Mewtwo’s return and also hinted at the debut of a Mythical Pokémon species. The enduring popularity of Pokémon GO, which recently celebrated its 8th anniversary, continues to drive engagement and innovation in the augmented reality gaming space.
The event artwork features familiar Kanto Pokémon alongside the crocodile-like Pokémon Sandile. However, Mewtu’s prominent position floating in the image confirms its highly anticipated return.
“I can’t say anything concrete, but look forward to the Pokémon you notice in the key visual,” a spokesperson told Japanese Pokémon portal rocketnews24go in a machine translation. “Especially Mewtwo – I think that will be really exciting for people who have been participating in GO Fest since the beginning.”
Could this finally be the moment Mega Mewtwo X and Y become available after years of waiting? These Mega Evolutions remain the only missing forms from the original set of Mega Pokémon in the franchise. Meanwhile, the game is set to continue introducing Mega Pokémon from Pokémon Legends: Z-A, with Mega Salamence and Mega Metagross arriving later this month.
Although Mewtu is currently only showcased for the Pokémon GO Fest in Tokyo, such imagery typically indicates species that will be available during the subsequent global GO Fest—and it’s unlikely the creature will be limited to a local event given the hype surrounding its return.
The same applies to this year’s GO Fest logo, which, as always, contains a subtle hint at the newest Mythical Pokémon coming soon. Looking at the small blue lightning bolts in the 2026 design, Zeraora appears to be a strong contender. The Pokémon recently received a fresh Mega Evolution, making it a fitting addition.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Pokémon and the 10th anniversary of Pokémon GO—two milestones fans expect to be celebrated this summer. More information about what’s in store for the Pokémon franchise will be revealed on Pokémon Day, February 27th, where the series’ 10th generation of games and creatures is expected to be unveiled.
