- Who is Fatih Birol? IEA Director Joins Time’s Most Influential Global List
International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol has been recognized by Time as one of the world’s 100 most influential people for 2026. This marks the second time Dr. Birol has appeared on the prestigious list, having previously been included in 2021. For the 2026 edition, he was placed in the “Leaders” category and stands as the only Turkish national featured on the list.
The recognition underscores the critical role of the IEA as the global energy authority, particularly in maintaining energy security and cooperation during periods of global fragmentation. Time highlighted Dr. Birol’s commitment to data-driven decision-making and his ability to anticipate emerging challenges, specifically noting his focus on the necessity of abundant energy for development in the Global South and the urgent need to address the impact of energy on climate change.
“This is very humbling. The IEA is a small international organisation in terms of our budget and staffing, but I believe this honour reflects the huge value of the work we do to help countries around the world deliver on their goals of improving energy security, affordability and sustainability – including in challenging times such as the current moment,” said Dr. Birol. “I share this honour with my committed and hard-working colleagues at the IEA. We are a rigorous, data-driven organisation, and we are determined to lead the global energy journey towards the betterment of humanity.”
By appearing on the Time 100 list in two separate years, Dr. Birol joins an exclusive group of top CEOs, cultural icons, and heads of government who have been recognized multiple times over the last two decades. The annual list, which categorizes figures into artists, titans, innovators, icons, leaders, and pioneers, serves as a benchmark for global impact, and achievement.
The inclusion of the IEA chief reflects the ongoing global priority of balancing energy affordability with sustainability goals. As the world navigates complex geopolitical shifts, the IEA’s role in providing reliable energy data remains central to international economic policy and climate strategy.
