River Plate is undergoing a midfield overhaul as coach Marcelo Gallardo begins to shape the team ahead of the 2026 season. The Argentine powerhouse has secured Fausto Vera on a one-year loan from Atlético Mineiro, with an option to buy, marking the first arrival under a new, more financially conservative transfer strategy. River is also actively pursuing Estudiantes’ Santiago Ascacibar as they aim to address a long-standing need for stability and strength in the centre of the pitch, following significant previous investment in the position.

River Plate is bolstering its midfield ahead of the 2026 season, securing Fausto Vera from Atlético Mineiro on a one-year loan with an option to buy. The move marks the first official signing for coach Marcelo Gallardo as he reshapes the squad, and the club is also pursuing Santiago Ascacibar to further strengthen the center of the pitch.

After two weeks of negotiations, River and Atlético Mineiro reached an agreement for the loan of the 25-year-old Vera, with a purchase option valued between $4 and $4.5 million. Vera returns to Argentine football after three seasons in Brazil, where he struggled for consistent playing time under Jorge Sampaoli. His last appearance for Mineiro was November 16 against Bragantino.

Despite interest from MLS and Mexican clubs, Vera expressed a strong desire to join River Plate, a key factor in finalizing the deal. This transfer aligns with River’s new financial strategy: prioritizing loan deals with options to buy, allowing the club to evaluate players before committing to permanent contracts.

River’s leadership, headed by president Stefano Di Carlo, is aiming to reduce spending in the transfer market. The club invested approximately $70 million on 16 players over the last three transfer windows, with limited success. New contracts now include a salary cap of 60%, with the remaining portion tied to performance-based incentives.

Vera is the first player to arrive under these new conditions and is already in Argentina awaiting a medical examination, expected before the weekend pending document exchange. The midfielder, who came through the ranks at Argentinos Juniors, featured in 32 matches this season across all competitions – Brasileirão, Copa Sudamericana, Copa do Brasil, and Campeonato Mineiro – totaling 21 starts, one goal, and 1728 minutes played. Despite having a contract with Mineiro until December 2027, he fell out of favor with the coaching staff.

Vera initially transferred from Argentinos to Corinthians in 2022 for $7.5 million for 70% of his rights, after 75 appearances with nine goals and four assists for Argentinos. He played 96 games for Corinthians, scoring twice and providing four assists, before moving to Atlético Mineiro for $4.5 million. Now, he returns to Argentina hoping to rediscover his best form. He’s known for his technique, passing range, and vision, but isn’t a traditional defensive midfielder.

Gallardo isn’t stopping with Vera and is prioritizing the acquisition of Santiago Ascacibar. Following the Trofeo de Campeones match on Saturday in San Nicolás, River will accelerate negotiations for the 28-year-old midfielder. Ascacibar is considered a top target, and River is prepared to invest significantly, with his transfer valued at at least $6 million. Both the player and Estudiantes president Juan Sebastián Verón have publicly indicated their openness to a deal, and initial talks between River officials and the player’s agents, Kristian Bereit and Federico Iglesias, have already taken place.

River Camp will host pre-season training starting Saturday, but Gallardo already has Vera secured as his first reinforcement and is eagerly awaiting progress on the Ascacibar front. These two signings represent a clear effort to solidify River’s midfield, an area that has required significant investment in recent years – totaling $35 million on players like Matías Kranevitter, Rodrigo Villagra, Nicolás Fonseca, Kevin Castaño, and Juan Portillo. The club is now focused on making smart, targeted acquisitions to address a long-standing weakness.
