FDA Limits Fluoride Supplements for Children Amid Safety Concerns

The Food and Drug Administration today announced it is restricting the use of fluoride supplements intended to strengthen children’s teeth, a move that could impact dental health strategies in areas with limited access to fluoridated water.

The FDA stated that fluoride tablets and lozenges are no longer recommended for children under the age of three, or for those older who are not at high risk of tooth decay. Previously, these supplements had been prescribed for children as young as six months old. The agency sent warning letters to four companies, advising them to adhere to the new limitations, rather than pursuing complete market removal as initially suggested in May.

A new scientific analysis released by the FDA concluded that the benefits of fluoride supplements for children’s teeth are limited and may be linked to potential health concerns, including disruptions to the gut microbiome, weight gain, and cognitive effects. “For the same reason fluoride may work to kill bacteria on teeth, it may also alter the gut microbiome, which may have broader health implications,” the agency explained in a statement. The American Dental Association disputes these claims, maintaining that fluoride, when prescribed by dentists, poses no significant health risks. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has previously characterized fluoride as a “dangerous neurotoxin,” and is also pursuing efforts to end the practice of adding fluoride to public water supplies. The FDA’s actions do not affect fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, or treatments administered in dental offices. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides detailed information on water fluoridation and its benefits.

The FDA also issued a letter to dentists and healthcare providers outlining the potential risks associated with the supplements, and officials indicated they will continue to monitor the safety and efficacy of fluoride products.
