Ecuadorian forward Felipe Caicedo is contemplating retirement from professional soccer following the tragic murder of teammate Mario Pineida last Wednesday. The incident coincides with a challenging season for Caicedo, who has seen limited playing time with Barcelona de Guayaquil.

“The most likely thing is that I will retire. I’m not planning to continue; Mario’s (Pineida) death has hit me very hard, and I don’t want anything to do with soccer,” Caicedo told reporters. The veteran striker turned 37 years old on September 5th.

Pineida was fatally shot last Wednesday in northern Guayaquil, a devastating attack that also claimed the life of a woman accompanying him and left his mother injured.

Caicedo, a frequent call-up for the Ecuadorian national team and one of its all-time leading scorers, joined Barcelona at the beginning of 2025. However, he has featured in only twenty matches, scoring three goals for the club.

Prior to the end of the season, the former Manchester City, Sporting Lisbon, Málaga, Levante, Lazio, and Inter Milan player had hinted at the possibility of either continuing his career with Barcelona or transitioning into a role within the club’s management.
