FIFA is planning to further increase the prize money for the 2026 World Cup, building on an already substantial raise from the previous tournament.

The international football governing body announced in December that this year’s prize fund would be 50 percent higher than in Qatar, reaching a total of $655 million. Now, FIFA hopes to expand the pot even further, citing strong financial performance during the 2023–2026 cycle, during which it generated $11 billion in revenue.

“FIFA confirms that discussions are underway to increase revenues for all football associations,” a spokesperson said. “This means there is a proposal to raise prize money at the World Cup, as well as provide more funding to all other member associations. FIFA is proud to be in its strongest financial position ever and to support global sport accordingly.”

Under the current structure, the champion is set to receive approximately $50 million, the runner-up $33 million, and each of the 16 teams eliminated in the group stage $9 million. These figures may rise as negotiations continue.

The 2026 World Cup will begin on Thursday, June 11, with the final scheduled for Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The tournament will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring an expanded 48-team format.
