Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, but players will require a separate subscription to play the game on the novel platform, even if they already subscribe on other systems. Square Enix confirmed the launch during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2026, with director and producer Naoki Yoshida and company president Takashi Kiryu revealing that the Switch 2 version will require its own distinct subscription model. According to Yoshida, this decision followed extensive discussions with Nintendo and differs from how the game operates on other platforms. Players who already maintain an active subscription on another platform will receive a 50 percent discount on the Switch 2 subscription, provided they have remaining game time on their current account. However, they will still need to purchase the game separately for the Switch 2 and pay for the new subscription to access the game on Nintendo’s hybrid console. The game will first be available through a one-month early access period starting in August, designed to ensure server stability before official service begins. During both the early access phase and after launch, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will not be required to play Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2. This marks the first time the long-running MMORPG will be available on a Nintendo console, expanding access to the critically acclaimed title. The separate subscription requirement represents a notable shift in how Square Enix manages cross-platform access, though the discounted rate for existing players aims to ease the transition.
