A fire broke out at a waste disposal site in Partizánska Ľupča, in the Liptovský Mikuláš district, on Friday, prompting a large response from emergency services.
Firefighters from Liptovský Mikuláš, Ružomberok, and Žilina, along with volunteer fire crews from Partizánska Ľupča, Likavka, Liptovské Sliače, Liptovská Ondrašová, and Liptovský Trnovec, and the Safirs Mondi SCP fire department, were dispatched to the scene.
Due to concerns about air quality from the smoke, local authorities issued a public safety alert. The municipality of Partizánska Ľupča urged residents to close windows and avoid public spaces whenever possible, stating on social media: “Dear citizens. Due to the fire at the municipal waste landfill, we ask you to close windows in your homes and, if possible, refrain from staying in public areas until further notice, for the protection of your health.”
Updated 19:50 – “The fire was contained using two B streams, three C streams, and one high-pressure stream, while simultaneously digging up and covering the waste with earth. Air quality measurements were taken with negative results – no harmful levels were detected. Operations are ongoing,” fire officials reported on social media.
