Two Buildings Collapse in Istanbul Following Natural Gas Explosion

Istanbul – A natural gas explosion in the Fatih district of Istanbul on Sunday, March 22, 2026, led to the collapse of two adjacent buildings, resulting in one death and at least ten injuries, according to early reports. The incident underscores the potential dangers associated with aging infrastructure in densely populated urban areas.

The collapse occurred around 12:00 local time on Ebe Sokak in the Ayvansaray neighborhood. Police, fire, and emergency medical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, along with personnel from the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

Initial assessments suggest the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Following the blast, the two buildings next to each other crumbled.

“According to initial findings, the explosion was thought to be caused by natural gas, after which two buildings under construction collapsed next to it,” stated a release from the Istanbul Governor’s Office. “Many AFAD, fire, and health teams were dispatched to the scene and search and rescue efforts began. As of now, 3 of the 5 people thought to be under the rubble have been rescued and taken to hospitals. Search and rescue efforts continue for the 2 people remaining under the rubble.”

Rescue workers were able to extract individuals trapped under the debris. As of Sunday afternoon, one person had died from their injuries, and ten others were hospitalized, including one in critical condition. Efforts to locate and rescue any remaining individuals trapped within the rubble are ongoing.

Damage to surrounding buildings has as well been reported.

An investigation into the incident has been launched by authorities, as announced by Minister Gürlek.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
