Flamengo & Palmeiras: Historic Points in Brazilian League 2023

Brazilian football’s Serie A is witnessing a potentially historic season as Flamengo and Palmeiras demonstrate a level of dominance not often seen in the league. With Flamengo already reaching 71 points, equaling championship totals from recent years, and Palmeiras closely behind, both clubs are on track to shatter point records previously set by São paulo in 2008. This surge in performance highlights a growing gap between the top teams and the rest of the competition, raising questions about the future balance of power in Brazilian football.

Flamengo is on pace to achieve a historically dominant season in Brazil’s Serie A, already surpassing point totals from recent championship campaigns.

The Rio de Janeiro club has amassed 71 points, equaling the championship tallies of Fluminense (2010), Corinthians (2011), and their own title-winning season in 2020.

Only São Paulo’s 2008 championship run, with 75 points, stands as a higher single-season total in the modern era of the Brazilian league.

Flamengo and Palmeiras both have the potential to reach historic point totals this season, demonstrating a level of dominance rarely seen in the tightly contested Brazilian top flight.

To put the current form into context, Palmeiras won the 2023 title with 70 points, just two ahead of runners-up Grêmio.

Flamengo also achieved 67 points in their 2009 championship victory, finishing with the same difference over Internacional in second place.

While high point totals are typical for champions, the current pace suggests a potential outlier season, with both Flamengo and Palmeiras capable of “monopolizing” the standings.

There have been exceptions to the rule, notably the 2004 season, where Santos and Athletico Paranaense finished separated by only three points.

Santos claimed the title with 89 points, followed closely by Athletico Paranaense with 86.

However, the 2004 season featured a 24-team format with eight additional matchdays, making a direct comparison to the current 20-team league unrealistic due to the extra 24 points available.
