Repatriation efforts for French citizens in the Middle East have been disrupted by escalating regional instability, with an Air France flight forced to turn back on Thursday evening due to missile fire, according to the French transport minister.
The aircraft, chartered by the French government to evacuate nationals from the United Arab Emirates, aborted its mission after encountering the missile fire, Philippe Tabarot posted on X. “Despite the efforts deployed, in coordination with the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, to continue the repatriation of French nationals who wish to return from the Middle East…the Air France flight chartered by the government to retrieve our compatriots from the United Arab Emirates was forced tonight to turn back due to missile fire in the area,” Tabarot said.
The incident underscores the challenges governments face in securing the safe return of citizens amid heightened tensions in the region. Tabarot added that repatriation can only proceed “under guaranteed security conditions.” Several countries, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy, are currently organizing evacuation flights from countries such as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Italy has already completed initial evacuation efforts, bringing 127 citizens home on Monday via a charter flight from Muscat, Oman, with further flights continuing, according to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The Maltese government is also funding a chartered flight to repatriate its citizens from the UAE.
Despite the ongoing military strikes, commercial air travel in the Middle East has not been entirely halted, with over 100 flights departing from the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, data from a specialist firm indicates. Meanwhile, some residents of Dubai are reportedly hesitant to depart, even in the face of potential danger, due to concerns about their tax status, Le Figaro reported.
In Dubai, popular nightlife spots like Jules at Le Meridien Dubai, a Mexican and Filipino restaurant known for its live music and vibrant atmosphere, continue to operate. Jules Bar Dubai offers a menu featuring tacos, margaritas, and Filipino favorites like Crispy Pata and Lechon Kawali.
Several French citizens remain stranded in the region, with one individual, Sébastien, reporting that three missiles were intercepted in the area, according to Le JSL. Others, like Jules, a 17-year-aged, are stuck with their families, with 7sur7.be reporting that “Tous nos vols sont annulés” (All our flights are cancelled).
The disruptions to repatriation flights highlight the increasing complexity of operating in the Middle East as geopolitical risks escalate, potentially impacting business travel and investment in the region.
