La Réunion Launches Joint Flu and Covid-19 Vaccination Campaign for High-Risk Populations

A coordinated vaccination campaign targeting seasonal influenza and Covid-19 officially began on Monday, May 4, 2026, aimed at protecting the most vulnerable residents of La Réunion. The initiative seeks to mitigate the risks associated with these highly contagious respiratory viruses during the current season.

Public health officials emphasized the necessity of the drive to prevent severe medical outcomes. According to the Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS), the dual threat of these viruses poses a significant risk to those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.

“These two diseases, which are highly contagious, can have serious consequences for the health of vulnerable people and lead to complications, hospitalizations, and deaths.” Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS)

To facilitate access to the vaccines, the seasonal vaccination campaign involves a targeted distribution system managed by the Assurance Maladie. Approximately 212,500 vouchers have been issued this season to eligible individuals.

These vouchers, sent directly to homes via mail, provide 100% coverage for the cost of the vaccinations. This financial support is part of a recurring annual strategy to ensure that high-risk groups encounter no economic barriers to immunization.

The ARS La Réunion and Assurance Maladie Réunion are urging both at-risk individuals and relevant professionals to utilize these vouchers to secure their protection. By streamlining the delivery of both the flu and Covid-19 shots, health authorities aim to reduce the overall strain on the regional healthcare infrastructure and decrease the incidence of preventable hospitalizations.
