}Nestlé and several other prominent baby formula manufacturers are facing a major crisis as reports of infant deaths in France and a widespread product recall impacting over 60 countries surface. The recall, which includes brands like Beba and Alfamino in switzerland, stems from concerns over potential contamination with a toxin suspected to be cereulid. This incident is prompting scrutiny of supply chain practices and food safety protocols across the industry, as investigators trace the source of the contamination to a Chinese supplier, Cabio Biotech.

Nestlé and other major baby formula manufacturers are facing scrutiny following reports of infant deaths in France and a massive product recall spanning over 60 countries. The crisis centers around potential contamination of a key ingredient, raising concerns about supply chain vulnerabilities and food safety protocols within the industry. The unfolding situation is prompting investigations and heightened vigilance from regulatory bodies worldwide.
French Authorities Investigate Deaths, Illnesses
The investigation was triggered by reports of illness and, tragically, the deaths of two infants in France. Bertille Fernandez, a mother in Paris, described her experience after her baby consumed a Nestlé product: “I brushed my teeth and suddenly heard a noise. My son vomited everywhere. He continued to vomit for days, and had diarrhea after every bottle.”
While a direct link to the contaminated formula hasn’t been definitively established, French authorities have launched a formal investigation. Renaud Gaudeul, the public prosecutor of Angers, stated, “There are elements that lead us to believe there is a connection, and others that make us doubt. The investigation is just beginning, and it is too early for details.”
Swiss authorities report no known cases of illness within the country, but the Federal Office of Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV) is closely monitoring the situation. “We are following the developments very closely,” said BLV Director Manel Nobel.
Global Recall Impacts Major Brands
The initial alert came on December 11, when Nestlé detected contamination during a routine inspection at a factory in the Netherlands. By early January, the company initiated a voluntary recall of baby formula products in over 60 countries, marking the largest recall in the company’s history. In Switzerland, the brands Beba and Alfamino are affected.

The concern focuses on a contaminant suspected to be Cereulid, a toxin. Nestlé opted for a proactive approach, according to spokesperson Navratil: “We launched a voluntary and precautionary recall in all affected countries in collaboration with the authorities. I want to assure you that there have been no confirmed cases of illness linked to the affected products.”
Chinese Supplier Under Scrutiny
Swiss manufacturer Hochdorf followed suit this week, recalling batches of its Bimbosan product. Approximately 10,000 packages were removed from shelves, representing roughly 1% of the company’s annual production. Hochdorf stated the recalled products were “not hazardous to health.”
French companies Lactalis and Danone have also initiated recalls. Investigations have revealed a common link: all affected manufacturers sourced the problematic additive from the same supplier – Cabio Biotech, a Chinese firm. The contamination is believed to have originated there. SRF’s China correspondent, Lukas Messmer, noted the case exemplifies the reliance of European companies on Chinese suppliers.
Nestlé has stated it has terminated its relationship with Cabio Biotech and is now sourcing the ingredient from an alternative supplier. The Federal Office of Food Safety continues to monitor the situation closely.
