France is launching a new national strategy to combat rising obesity rates, a public health challenge impacting communities across the country and worldwide. The initiative, announced by officials this week, aims to improve access to comprehensive and sustained care for those affected by obesity, a condition increasingly linked to socioeconomic disparities. Building on existing efforts to recognize obesity as a chronic disease, the new roadmap prioritizes personalized treatment, expanded healthcare resources, and innovative therapies as rates continue to climb.
France is launching a new national strategy to combat rising obesity rates, a growing public health concern worldwide. The initiative aims to reverse the increasing prevalence of obesity and improve the health of those affected, particularly as the condition disproportionately impacts individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and in certain geographic areas.
Officials announced the roadmap will focus on increasing access to personalized, long-term care, expanding the number of trained healthcare professionals, and promoting innovative treatment approaches. This comes as obesity, especially severe cases, continues to increase in France, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive and sustained response.
A New Care Pathway
For over 15 years, France has implemented various measures to address obesity, including recognizing it as a chronic disease and establishing specialized centers such as the CSO Paca-Ouest in Marseille and the CSO Paca-Est in Nice. However, the Ministry acknowledges these efforts haven’t been enough to curb the growing rates of obesity or overcome challenges in accessing consistent, comprehensive care.
By early 2026, a strengthened, coordinated care pathway – currently in a trial phase – will be rolled out for adults with complex obesity or obesity-related complications. This pathway will integrate medical treatment with dietary guidance, psychological support, and tailored physical activity programs. The move reflects a growing understanding that effective obesity management requires a holistic approach.
The new strategy also seeks to “augmenter l’accès à des soins personnalisés, de proximité et inscrits dans la durée” and “développer le nombre de professionnels formés et sensibilisés,” according to officials. The plan also emphasizes “valoriser et généraliser les parcours et prises en charge innovantes.” This focus on innovative care could lead to wider adoption of newer treatments and therapies.
The initiative aims “d’infléchir la progression de l’obésité et améliorer la santé des personnes concernées,” underscoring the urgency of addressing this escalating health crisis.
