French Government Announces Fuel Aid for 3 Million Workers Amid Middle East War Concerns

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced a modern fuel assistance program on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, targeting approximately three million “heavy users” of fuel amid rising prices linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict. The initiative provides an average discount of 20 euro cents per liter of fuel, aimed specifically at modest-income workers who rely heavily on transportation for their livelihoods. The announcement followed a ministerial meeting focused on energy policy and comes as fuel prices have surged in recent weeks due to the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has disrupted regional stability and affected global energy markets. Lecornu emphasized that the government is prioritizing targeted, monthly support over broad-based measures to ensure aid reaches those most affected. In addition to the new program for “grands rouleurs,” Lecornu confirmed enhanced support for farmers and fishers starting in May. Fuel subsidies for fishermen will increase from 20 to between 30 and 35 euro cents per liter of non-road diesel, while agricultural workers will receive 15 euro cents per liter of the same fuel type. The government estimates the total cost of the fuel aid package at six billion euros, with four billion euros expected from state funds and an additional two billion euros from social contributions in 2026. Lecornu framed the measures as part of a broader effort to mitigate the economic impact of the conflict on households and key sectors.
