A dream trip to Indonesia turned tragic for 26-year-traditional Freya Schmitz, who died after suffering a bacterial infection following an injury sustained while surfing. The story is being featured in the new season of the docuseries Break Free, which follows young travelers as they navigate life abroad.
Freya’s brother, Lennart Schmitz, 30, traveled to Siberut, one of the Mentawai Islands, to understand what happened to his sister. According to LINDA.nl, Lennart described the experience as deeply emotional, stating, “Toen ik daar was … Ik verplaatste me helemaal in haar. Alsof ik terugging naar het moment waarop ze haar laatste adem uitblies.” (When I was there… I completely put myself in her place. As if I was going back to the moment she breathed her last breath.)
Freya, described as energetic, cheerful, and ambitious, was drawn to adventure and connecting with others. “Freya wilde alles oppakken, alles doen. Soms misschien wel té veel,” Lennart shared. (“Freya wanted to take on everything, do everything. Sometimes maybe too much.”) He noted their contrasting personalities, explaining, “Ik beschrijf ons als een soort yin en yang. Freya wilde alles uit het leven halen. Ik ben daar juist rustiger in.” (“I describe us as a kind of yin and yang. Freya wanted to get everything out of life. I am more relaxed in that regard.”)
The incident began when Freya injured her leg while surfing. She received medical attention for a deep wound at a local hospital, and initially, she seemed to be recovering well. However, her pain worsened, eventually becoming so severe she couldn’t walk. She attempted to leave the island, but boat travel was the only option to reach the mainland.
Break Free’s new season premieres with Freya’s story, exploring her journey to find balance between her parents’ differing influences – a results-oriented father and an artistic mother – by traveling to the remote Indonesian island. Ziggo Entertainment notes that Freya sought solitude and reflection, venturing to a place where she couldn’t easily return home if problems arose.
The series also features Chris Zegers, who will pay tribute to Bram and Robbin in an upcoming episode, according to Televizier.nl. Viewers can watch or catch up on episodes of Break Free on TVgids.nl. The show’s exploration of young travelers facing challenges abroad resonates with audiences interested in adventure and the complexities of modern life.
Lennart’s journey to the island, as detailed in NPO Start, is a search for closure and understanding, a poignant exploration of grief and the enduring bond between siblings.
