The world of Westeros is expanding beyond the slight screen. Warner Bros. Is officially developing a feature film set in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe, bringing the epic scope of “Game of Thrones” to the big screen.

The project, penned by Beau Willimon (known for his work on “Andor” and “House of Cards”), will focus on the story of King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. The film is being envisioned as a large-scale production, comparable in ambition to “Dune,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. This announcement arrives as the entertainment industry continues to explore expansive fantasy adaptations for a wide audience.

The idea of a “Game of Thrones” movie has been discussed for years, dating back to 2013 when the original showrunners, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, pitched three feature films to HBO as a potential conclusion to the series. Whereas, HBO ultimately decided to remain focused on its core television business.

Currently, Paramount boss David Ellison has expressed enthusiasm for the project, citing “Game of Thrones” as his favorite HBO show. This positive signal comes as Warner Bros. Is expected to be acquired by Paramount Skydance. The studio is as well developing potential prequel and sequel series, potentially centered around characters like Arya Stark or Jon Snow.

The film will serve as a prequel to the events of the original “Game of Thrones” series, detailing the rise of Aegon the Conqueror, who unified six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros. The project’s development marks a significant step in expanding the “Game of Thrones” franchise into new mediums.
