Gaming Growth & AI: New BCG Report Reveals Industry Shift

The global gaming industry is showing strong signs of recovery, fueled by renewed player interest and a wave of innovation driven by artificial intelligence. A new report from Boston Consulting Group details a surge in gaming engagement-with 55% of gamers increasing playtime in the last six months-and finds that roughly half of game studios are now integrating AI into their development processes, streamlining creation and possibly lowering costs [[1]]. This shift is occurring alongside increased adoption of cloud gaming and a growing market for user-generated content, signaling a dynamic period of change for the sector.

The gaming industry is poised for a resurgence after years of stagnation, fueled by increasing player engagement and the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into game development, according to a new report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

The report reveals that 55% of gamers are currently playing more than they were six months ago, signaling a return to growth for the sector, as detailed in a press release from BCG. This shift comes as AI tools are becoming increasingly accessible, potentially lowering development costs and accelerating innovation in game design.

AI Rapidly Transforming Game Development

The growth isn’t limited to younger demographics. The report indicates a significant increase in gaming among adults. Over 40% of individuals aged 60 and above now spend at least five hours a week gaming, while more than half of those in the 40-50 age range – often referred to as Generation X – report similar levels of engagement.

BCG also notes that many adults are introducing their children to gaming at a young age, contributing to a broader and more sustainable player base. This intergenerational appeal is a key factor in the industry’s renewed momentum.

On the development side, a notable technological shift is underway. Approximately half of all game studios are now utilizing artificial intelligence in their development processes.

Over 7,000 games on the PC platform Steam already incorporate AI, according to BCG. This integration is streamlining development, reducing costs, and enabling new game mechanics and content possibilities. The adoption of AI reflects a broader trend across the tech industry towards automation and intelligent tools.

Alongside this, the market for user-generated content (UGC) is experiencing substantial growth. Games like Fortnite and Roblox are projected to distribute around $1.5 billion to content creators this year.

The report also shows that over 40% of players are more engaged with UGC than they were the previous year, highlighting the increasing importance of community-driven content in the gaming experience.

Price-Conscious Gamers Drive Market Shifts

Cloud gaming is also transitioning from a niche offering to a mainstream option. Six out of ten gamers have already tried cloud gaming, with 80% reporting a positive experience. BCG estimates the market could grow from $1.4 billion today to over $18 billion by 2030. This expansion is driven by improved infrastructure and accessibility.

However, players are becoming increasingly price-sensitive. Around 75% state that price influences their purchasing decisions, with many waiting for discounts before buying new games. According to BCG, this necessitates a reevaluation of launch models, subscription services, and content bundles to fully capitalize on growth potential.

“Over the next five years, we anticipate an explosion of new game content and players,” says Ernesto Pagano, senior partner at BCG, in the press release. “Cloud gaming, user-generated content, AI, and the opening of app stores will fundamentally change how games are developed and distributed.”

Pagano also emphasizes that user expectations will continue to rise.

“Players will expect more – fresher experiences, stronger communities, and the freedom to play across devices.”
