After a lauded three-decade acting career, Kate Winslet makes her directorial debut with Goodbye June, a deeply personal project arriving in select theaters December 12 and on Netflix December 24. The film, starring Toni Collette,Helen Mirren, and Timothy Spall, was born from a screenplay written by Winslet’s son,Joe Anders, and confronts themes of family and loss following the death of her mother,Sally,in 2017.Winslet’s foray behind the camera also arrives amid ongoing industry conversations surrounding the need for greater representation of female filmmakers.

Kate Winslet has opened up about her directorial debut with the film Goodbye June, revealing the deeply personal reason behind her decision to step behind the camera after a celebrated 33-year acting career.

The film, Winslet explained, serves as a heartfelt tribute to her mother, Sally, who passed away in 2017 after a battle with ovarian cancer. The story for Goodbye June originated with a screenplay penned by her son, Joe Anders, and centers on siblings gathering to care for their mother during the holiday season as she receives palliative care.

Winslet: “The film isn’t about death as much as it is about life.”

According to reports from SSBCrack News, Winslet emphasized that the film focuses on celebrating life rather than dwelling on mortality. “This isn’t a film about death… it’s a film about life, first and foremost,” she said.

The Reader star revealed that the idea of directing had been brewing for nearly a decade, but she waited for the right moment. “Now is the time I feel my children are old enough, and I can be away a little bit,” she shared.

Winslet also highlighted the underrepresentation of female directors in the industry, noting that only 16 of the top 100 films at the UK box office last year were directed or co-directed by women. This observation comes as Hollywood continues to address calls for greater gender parity both on and off screen.

Increasing the number of female directors can inspire new generations.

“If there are more of us doing it, we will see more following the path,” she asserted, underscoring the importance of visibility and mentorship in encouraging aspiring female filmmakers.

Goodbye June boasts an impressive cast including Toni Collette, Helen Mirren, and Timothy Spall.

The film will have a limited theatrical release on December 12, followed by a global launch on Netflix on December 24.
