Despite a recent nationwide price reduction from Petrobras, gasoline prices in Santa Catarina are trending upward, reaching a nine-month high of R$6.56 per gallon as of Monday, july 26th. The seemingly counterintuitive increase highlights the complex factors influencing fuel costs-including state taxes and distributor margins-that impact consumers at the pump . Gasoline prices in Santa Catarina remained relatively stable for much of 2025, beginning the year at R$6.26 and closing at R$6.30, according to weekly surveys conducted by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP). The most significant fluctuations were observed between February and May, reflecting an increase in the fixed ICMS tax rate levied by state governments.
However, in 2026, the most consumed fuel by drivers started the year on an upward trend, rising from R$6.30 in the last survey of the previous year to an average of R$6.56 in the two most recent weekly surveys (see chart below). This January increase is again attributable to the annual update of the fixed ICMS rate on gasoline charged by the states. The amount is determined nationally by the National Council of Finance Policy (Confaz), which comprises the state finance secretariats.
Gasoline Price Variation in Santa Catarina
The last time the average gasoline price reached R$6.56 was in a survey released on April 6th of last year, approximately nine months and 20 days ago. Since then, most surveys have shown slight decreases in price until the end of last year. The fluctuations in fuel prices highlight the complex interplay of taxes, distribution costs, and global market factors.

Petrobras’s R$0.14 reduction in the price of fuel sold to distributors is expected to help mitigate the impact of recent price increases on gasoline in Santa Catarina. However, the state-owned oil company emphasizes that the price it charges distributors accounts for only one-third of the final price paid by motorists at gas stations. This final price also includes the costs and profit margins of distributors and gas stations, as well as state and federal taxes.
