Google is rolling out a major Android Auto update, bringing the power of its latest AI model, Gemini, to drivers in 45 countries. The expansion gives approximately 250 million users access to the AI assistant while on the road.
The integration transforms Gemini into a digital co-pilot, capable of responding to voice commands, providing helpful recommendations, and managing personal information directly from the vehicle’s dashboard. This move underscores the increasing integration of artificial intelligence into the automotive experience.
What Gemini Adds to Android Auto
Once activated, Gemini allows for hands-free conversations and can assist drivers with tasks like finding recommendations for activities at their destination. Users can also quickly locate emails or events from their Calendar, and even dictate messages that can be edited or translated into over 40 languages. Google says the system can also suggest stops along a route, create personalized music playlists, and function as a voice editor for notes and texts.
Accessing Gemini is similar to using Google Assistant: simply say “Hey Google,” use the microphone button within Android Auto, or hold down the button on the steering wheel.
Currently, the assistant integrates with information from Google Calendar, Google Tasks, and Keep, as well as Samsung Calendar, Reminder, and Notes applications. Google has confirmed that compatibility will be expanded to include third-party apps in a future update.
