The surge in popularity follows the recent launch of Gemini 3, which has been lauded by industry leaders and is prompting a re-evaluation of the AI chatbot landscape. While still behind ChatGPT in overall users, Google’s momentum signals a significant shift and increased investment in artificial intelligence development through 2026.

Google’s Gemini AI Assistant Surpasses 750 Million Monthly Active Users

Google’s Gemini AI assistant has reached a significant milestone, boasting over 750 million monthly active users, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. This represents a substantial increase of approximately 100 million users compared to the 650 million reported in the previous quarter.

The surge in user engagement comes just weeks after the debut of Gemini 3, Google’s latest artificial intelligence model, which has been widely praised by AI enthusiasts and even prompted some long-time ChatGPT users to switch allegiances. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, for example, acknowledged he had transitioned to Gemini. Wei-Lin Chiang, co-founder of LMArena, a benchmark for AI performance, described the launch as “more than just a leaderboard reshuffling.” The rapid adoption of Gemini 3 underscores the intensifying competition within the AI landscape.

The positive reception to Gemini 3 was so strong that reports surfaced of OpenAI initiating a “red code” situation internally in response. Even Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose company maintains a significant business relationship with OpenAI, reportedly expressed concern about Google’s growing competitive threat to OpenAI’s market dominance.

Despite Gemini’s impressive growth, it still trails behind ChatGPT in terms of overall user base. While OpenAI doesn’t regularly disclose active user numbers, a December report by The Information indicated that ChatGPT had reached nearly 900 million weekly users. However, Google’s gains demonstrate a clear momentum shift in the AI chatbot market.

Pichai highlighted the increased user engagement, stating, “We’re seeing significantly higher engagement per user, particularly since the launch of Gemini 3.” He added that Gemini 3 has become “the fastest-spreading model in the history of our company.” This success is helping Google rebuild its AI reputation following a rocky start to 2024 with issues surrounding Gemini’s image generation capabilities, as acknowledged by Sergey Brin.

“We are working at a very, very intense pace of innovation, and we are confident we can sustain this momentum through 2026,” Pichai said during the earnings call. Executives also revealed plans to double capital expenditures in 2026, with the majority of investment directed towards AI development.

Google has ambitious plans for Gemini this year. Apple recently selected Gemini to power the AI-driven overhaul of Siri, expected to launch later in 2024, and Samsung announced last month it will double the number of its mobile devices equipped with Gemini. The company is also working to make Gemini more “transactional” by integrating payment processing directly into the application. Looking ahead, Google is also considering incorporating advertising into Gemini conversations, though Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler emphasized, “We’re not rushing into that.” He added, “Advertising has always been part of scaling products to billions of users.”
