Potential Genetic Therapy Could Reverse Aging, Researchers Say

A new clinical trial has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to explore a potential method for cellular rejuvenation through genetic reprogramming, according to geroscientist Israel Pichardo. This research represents a significant step in the growing field of anti-aging therapies, which aims to address the biological processes that contribute to age-related decline.
The procedure, known as cellular epigenetic reprogramming, involves introducing genes into cells – specifically those of the retina – that are typically expressed during embryonic development. The goal is to restore vision, and early studies have shown promising results.
In studies involving mice and primates, researchers observed a restoration of vision following the treatment, which is initially being investigated as a potential therapy for glaucoma.
Whereas the study is in its early stages – currently Phase 1, focused on assessing safety and identifying potential adverse effects in volunteer patients – the long-term implications could be far-reaching. “We could potentially slow down the rate at which our organs age and maintain a more youthful expression of genes within cells,” Pichardo explained.
Looking further ahead, this approach could lead to new treatments for conditions like diabetes, certain types of cancer, and metabolic syndromes. Pichardo also suggested the possibility of creating entire organs in a lab and even curing genetic diseases through the production of nucleic acids.
this new method raises the possibility that humans could live to around 130 years traditional while maintaining a high quality of life.
