A German German police deployed officers from 15 states, along with federal police and criminal investigators, to manage protests Saturday in Giessen following the re-establishment of the youth wing of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The large-scale operation has sparked debate over police tactics and the limits of free assembly. Table of Contents Jannik Rienhoff, a Marburg-based attorney representing some of those detained during the demonstrations, said authorities showed little regard for the right to assemble. He alleged that officers at times charged into crowds and used force unlawfully. “Police ran at people and hit them, which is obviously illegal,” Rienhoff stated. Hesse Interior Minister Poseck defended the police response, arguing that without their presence, the situation would have escalated into serious violence and near-civil-war conditions. He accused the “Widersetzen” (Resistance) alliance, a protest group, of deliberately operating outside the bounds of the law. Poseck also expressed political concern over the forms of protest used against the AfD, stating that violence and lawbreaking harm democracy and ultimately benefit the far-right party. He did acknowledge that the vast majority of demonstrators were peaceful. Police reported three arrests, though those individuals were quickly released. A total of 25 criminal complaints were filed following the protests. Authorities said between 10 and 20 officers sustained minor injuries. Police President Krückemeier said, “Certainly, the worst-case scenarios did not occur,” adding that the scale of the deployment was appropriate. Police also stated that the demonstrations were largely peaceful throughout the day, but officers were attacked with stones, bottles, and pyrotechnic devices, and that protesters attempted to breach barriers to reach event halls. Hesse’s Minister President Rhein (CDU) condemned the violence, noting that it was also directed at police officers defending the rule of law. He argued that attempts to prevent other groups – even those one disagrees with – from exercising their rights strengthen political extremism. AfD Chairwoman Weidel denounced the protests as deeply undemocratic and warned of a level of violence “one must truly fear.” This news was broadcast on Deutschlandfunk on November 30, 2025.
