Google is significantly expanding the integration of its Gemini AI model into Gmail, promising a substantial shift in how users experience the popular email service. The company announced a suite of new features powered by Gemini 3, some of which are rolling out to all users immediately. This move underscores Google’s commitment to embedding AI across its product ecosystem, and signals growing competition in the AI-powered productivity space.

The updates include both features available to all Gmail users and premium functionalities reserved for subscribers to Google AI Premium or Google One. A centerpiece of the rollout is AI Inbox, a new inbox view designed to prioritize important emails and streamline communication. This feature, currently available in a beta program, categorizes messages into ‘Suggested Tasks’ – highlighting emails requiring attention – and ‘Keep Me Updated’ which consolidates event details, travel plans, and purchase confirmations.

Users will also gain access to more intelligent search capabilities with AI Overviews, allowing for natural language queries like “show me the return for the order I placed two weeks ago.” Gemini 3 will then surface relevant results. Furthermore, Google is introducing a Proofread feature, currently available in English for users in the United States with Google AI Pro or a Google One subscription, which offers suggestions to improve grammar, clarity, and tone.

Alongside these premium features, Google is also rolling out AI-powered enhancements to the free version of Gmail. Suggested Replies, an upgraded version of Smart Replies, will offer more contextually relevant responses. Additionally, AI Overviews will provide concise summaries of email threads directly within the inbox. Finally, the Help Me Write feature, an AI-powered writing assistant, will be available to help users compose emails. These free features are expected to become available in the coming weeks.
