Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6– slated for a potential release in November 2026 – may be diverging from the franchise’s action-adventure roots. Reports suggest the next iteration of GTA Online could evolve into a full-fledged massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMORPG, a shift signaled by planned features aligning with the genre’s conventions. Industry veteran Rich vogel’s insights are fueling speculation about persistent worlds and deeper character progression within the next GTA title.

Could GTA 6 evolve into a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG)? Currently, Grand Theft Auto titles are known as open-world action-adventure games. However, according to an industry professional, Rockstar Games may be shifting gears, potentially offering a full-fledged MMORPG experience with its next installment – and particularly with the next version of GTA Online.

The possibility emerged from a recent report by Wccftech, as relayed by Rockstar Mag. Rich Vogel, a veteran developer specializing in classic MMORPGs like Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, indicated he’s heard that many planned features for the next iteration of GTA Online align with the characteristics of the MMORPG genre. These features include persistent worlds, in-depth character progression, and extensive social interactions. The potential shift reflects a broader trend of game developers exploring more immersive and persistent online experiences.

If what I’ve heard about the features and gameplay of GTA 6 is accurate, it could evolve into an MMORPG, as many of its planned features are typical of the genre.

Looking at Rockstar’s development history, this evolution appears logical. Since the release of GTA 5, the company has consistently integrated role-playing game (RPG) elements into its titles. This includes character skill trees, experience point (EXP) acquisition, and an increasing focus on role-playing (RP) mechanics. This trend is even more pronounced in the online versions of both GTA Online and Red Dead Online.

While Rockstar Games has not officially commented on these details, the move appears to be a natural progression in the company’s game development strategy. Fans can expect to get their first glimpse of what’s in store on November 19, 2026, if all goes according to plan, with the anticipated release of GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
