Former Universidad de Chile manager Gustavo Álvarez has addressed the circumstances surrounding his departure from the Chilean club, clarifying rumors and detailing the end of his successful tenure that brought championship titles back to the “Azul.”

Álvarez directly responded to speculation regarding a potential legal dispute over his contract, emphasizing his desire for an amicable separation from the organization.

“My main objective was to end the relationship on good terms,” Álvarez stated in an interview with TNT Sports Íntimo. He explained that his contract included an extension clause that could have led to legal action.

The former manager confirmed he opted for a negotiated exit. “We were tied to a two-year contract with an issue regarding an extension […] that could have taken the matter to court. I preferred to avoid that,” he confessed.

To finalize his departure, Álvarez agreed to a financial compensation payment to the club. “There was a recognition, a gesture towards the club with a figure agreed upon by both parties,” he indicated.

He also reiterated that “I didn’t want to end it with a formal letter, even with the possibility of leaving for free. That’s not my way of doing things,” he asserted.

Deterioration of Relationship with Management

When questioned about a possible breakdown in his relationship with club officials, perhaps stemming from the signing of Eduardo Vargas, Álvarez downplayed any specific triggering event. Instead, he described a natural process of deterioration.

“I believe that every relationship gradually wears down and that’s normal in all walks of life,” the coach expressed. He denied that any serious incidents caused the split.

“There were no specific, serious events that provoked a rupture, just a wear and tear that I consider normal,” he clarified. He attributed the situation to accumulated fatigue within the working dynamic.

Regarding his interactions with Michael Clark, president of Azul Azul, Álvarez stated that communication remained respectful. “Michael came to speak with me two months before the end of the year,” he revealed.

“We spoke on good terms, I expressed everything I saw, everything I felt, but always from the position of an employee of the club,” he added.

Gustavo Álvarez Addresses His Immediate Future

The former La U manager used the opportunity to definitively deny that his resignation was prompted by a concrete job offer, whether from a national team or another club.

I have no job offers,” Álvarez declared emphatically. His decision, he insisted, was based solely on an assessment of the sporting process.

I considered that it was a worn-out process, that a change was best for both parties,” he explained. This move distances him from any speculation about his next destination.

“I present it that way, thinking only about the present and without any interest or convenience in the future,” he concluded.
