A new study links the use of chemical hair straightening and relaxing products to significantly increased risks of certain cancers, prompting health concerns and a reevaluation of product safety. Researchers found associations between these products and higher rates of pancreatic, thyroid, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnoses, building on existing scrutiny of perhaps harmful chemicals like formaldehyde found in these treatments. The findings, published in the *Journal of the National Cancer Institute*, underscore the need for greater awareness among consumers and further examination into long-term exposure effects [[1]].

Chemical hair straightening and relaxing products may significantly increase the risk of developing several types of cancer, a new study reveals. Researchers found a link between the use of these products and up to a 166% higher chance of certain cancer diagnoses.

The research, conducted by investigators at Emory University in Georgia, was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute on September 30, and recently highlighted by the British newspaper, the Daily Mail. Health experts are increasingly concerned about the presence of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, in many chemical hair treatments, including keratin treatments and hair styling products.

Study Details

The study analyzed data from a long-term health study involving more than 50,000 American women, aged 35 to 74. None of the participants had a personal history of breast cancer, but each had at least one sister who had been diagnosed with the disease. Participants were enrolled between 2003 and 2009 and followed through September 2021.

Significant Cancer Risk Increases

The study focused on cancer types with at least 100 cases recorded during the follow-up period and examined participants’ use of chemical hair straightening or relaxing treatments in the 12 months prior to enrollment.

Results showed a notable association between the use of these products and increased cancer risks. Women who used these treatments were found to be more likely to develop:

  • Pancreatic cancer, with a 166% increase in risk – a particularly dangerous cancer due to the challenges in early detection.
  • Thyroid cancer, with a 71% increase in risk.
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, with a 62% increase in risk.

The risk appeared to be even greater for women who used the products more than four times a year, the study indicated. This research adds to a growing body of evidence regarding the potential long-term health consequences of chemical hair treatments, particularly for frequent users.

Regulatory Action and Prevention

The European Union and at least ten U.S. states have already banned the use of formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing substances in personal care products as part of efforts to reduce potential health risks. Understanding these risks is crucial for individuals considering these treatments and for public health officials working to protect vulnerable populations.
