Harry Potter Series: HBO Release Date & First Look Revealed

A new era of Hogwarts is almost upon us. HBO Max has released the first teaser for its upcoming Harry Potter television series, confirming a Christmas 2026 premiere date. The series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for its first season, promises to bring a fresh take on the beloved story to the small screen.

The teaser offers a glimpse into the world of the Dursleys and a young Harry Potter’s difficult upbringing, including a poignant shot of him in his cupboard under the stairs. According to the trailer, the series will also feature never-before-seen moments from the books.

Dominic McLaughlin will star as Harry Potter, alongside Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The principal cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Development on the series began in January 2021, with plans for a decade-long production to faithfully adapt all the books. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod are creatively leading the project. Casting for the main roles commenced in November 2024, and McLaughlin, Stout, and Stanton were confirmed in May 2025 after a search that considered over 32,000 actors. Principal photography began in July 2025 at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England.

The series is a collaboration between HBO, Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films. The announcement of a television adaptation has generated significant excitement among fans, signaling a major event in the landscape of fantasy television.
