Host nation India has suffered a blow to their T20 World Cup campaign with the late injury withdrawal of fast bowler Harshit Rana. Rana sustained the injury during Wednesday’s warm-up match against South Africa in Navi Mumbai, forcing a last-minute squad adjustment ahead of the tournament’s February 7th opener. Mohammad Siraj is expected to fill the vacated spot, as India now recalibrates its bowling attack with the mega-event rapidly approaching.
Injury Blow for India as Harshit Rana Ruled Out of T20 World Cup
MUMBAI – India has suffered a significant setback just hours before the start of the T20 World Cup, with all-rounder Harshit Rana ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The fast bowler sustained the injury during a warm-up match against South Africa on Wednesday at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Rana was limited to just one over, conceding 16 runs, before leaving the field with discomfort in his knee. He attempted to complete his run-up twice but was visibly hampered by the pain. Mohammad Siraj will replace Rana in the squad, though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to make an official announcement shortly. Suryakumar Yadav had previously confirmed the injury to reporters.
The loss of Rana, a player capable of contributing with both bat and ball, could impact India’s team balance as they prepare for their opening match. India will be looking for contributions from across the squad as they aim to compete for the T20 World Cup title.
Rana is not the only Indian player dealing with fitness concerns. Sundar, who suffered a hamstring injury during the ODI series against New Zealand, is still working his way back to full fitness, though he is expected to be available before the tournament begins. Tilak Varma, who recently underwent surgery, has returned to the batting lineup, providing a boost to the team. He showcased his form in the warm-up match, scoring 45 runs off 19 balls.
India’s first match of the tournament is scheduled for February 7 against the United States at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
