Haugesund: Woman Arrested in Connection with Fatal Incident

HAUGESUND: Police are investigating a suspected homicide in Haugesund, Norway, after a woman was found dead Friday evening.

Authorities were alerted to a possible disturbance at a residence in the city center shortly after 8:00 p.m. Local time, according to a press release issued just after midnight.

Police and ambulance personnel responded to the scene.

– Bystanders reported hearing a commotion from the address, prompting them to notify emergency services, police attorney Fredrik Martin Soma told Haugesunds Avis.

Investigators are currently seeking additional witnesses who may have been in the area earlier Friday evening, as they have only been able to identify a limited number of people who observed the events.

– We haven’t launched a comprehensive neighborhood canvass yet, but that may happen Saturday morning, Soma said.

– The woman who has been charged with murder in Haugesund last night will be questioned today, police attorney Unni Byberg Malmin said Saturday morning.

Taken to Hospital for Evaluation

Haugesunds Avis reported that an area in the city center was cordoned off with police tape shortly after midnight. Forensic technicians arrived at the scene at 2:14 a.m.

Haugesunds Avis was also at the location at 8:30 p.m. Friday, where police and ambulance crews were present. At that time, authorities declined to comment on the nature of the incident.

Police attorney Soma stated that the victim, a woman in her 30s, was found inside the residence. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead shortly before 9:00 p.m.

– Efforts to resuscitate her were unfortunately unsuccessful. She was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead just before 9:00 p.m., Soma said in the press release.

A woman in her 40s was arrested at the scene and is now being held on suspicion of murder.

Soma told Haugesunds Avis that the victim was found indoors, and based on observations from both police and medical personnel, the suspect was taken into custody.

Family Connection Confirmed

– The woman was at the location. She was then examined by a doctor due to her mental state and underwent a physical examination, Soma said, declining to elaborate on the specifics.

Blood tests are expected to be analyzed. Soma did not comment on whether intoxication was a factor in the case.

– Tactical and technical investigations are underway. We have conducted interviews with witnesses and canvassed the area, Byberg Malmin said Saturday.

The victim is scheduled to undergo an autopsy today.

– The suspect and the victim are related, but we cannot elaborate on this further at this time. We are working to notify next of kin, the police attorney said.

The basis for the murder charge is evidence found at the scene. Byberg Malmin declined to provide further details at this time to avoid compromising the investigation.

The suspect has not yet been questioned, and her statement regarding the allegations remains unknown.

Police say the two women were related, but have not released further details.

Authorities have not disclosed whether either woman resided at the address, which is also being examined by forensic technicians.

– We are very early in the investigation phase and cannot provide further information at this time for the sake of the investigation. We are working with various hypotheses, including murder, Soma said.
