The creator of the beloved indie farming simulator Stardew Valley has directly addressed growing fan concerns regarding the status of their next project, Haunted chocolatier. Announced in 2021, Haunted Chocolatier has been the subject of speculation ranging from outright cancellation rumors to theories about its impact on Stardew Valley updates. In a recent statement, the developer sought to dispel these rumors, clarifying the separate development paths and timelines for both titles.
The developer behind the highly anticipated indie game Haunted Chocolatier has addressed several persistent rumors surrounding its development and its relationship to their previous hit, Stardew Valley. The clarification comes as fans grow increasingly eager for updates on the new title, which was first announced in 2021.
Responding directly to speculation, the developer stated unequivocally, “First of all, I am not cancelling Haunted Chocolatier. But even if I were, I wouldn’t do it to add content to Stardew Valley. Stardew Valley and Haunted Chocolatier are separate games. It doesn’t even make sense from a technical standpoint, as Haunted Chocolatier is being built from the ground up. It’s not the same ‘engine’ as Stardew Valley. You can’t just copy and paste Haunted Chocolatier into Stardew Valley.”
The developer also dismissed suggestions that updates to Stardew Valley are being used as a testing ground for concepts intended for Haunted Chocolatier. This practice is common in game development, but the developer insists it isn’t happening here.
“Nope. When I work on Stardew Valley, I’m not thinking about Haunted Chocolatier, and vice versa. I wouldn’t ‘test’ something in Stardew Valley because that wouldn’t be fair to Stardew Valley, and I wouldn’t want to spoil those ideas for Haunted Chocolatier by adding them to Stardew Valley first. Also, Stardew Valley is a very different game, so you can’t really ‘test’ anything for Haunted Chocolatier in a meaningful way.”
Rumors linking Stardew Valley updates to developer burnout related to Haunted Chocolatier were also refuted. The developer explained that continued work on Stardew Valley is driven by its ongoing popularity and a desire to further improve the game. “Stardew is a popular game with a growing player base, and I still have ideas on how to improve it.”
Finally, the developer addressed a circulating claim that Haunted Chocolatier wouldn’t be released until 2030. This, they said, stemmed from a misinterpretation of a previous conversation. The long development cycles for indie games often fuel speculation about release dates, highlighting the challenges of independent game creation.
“I never said that. I was asked in 2025 if it would come out in the next five years, and I said ‘I hope so.’ That’s very different than saying ‘it’s coming in 2030.’ The bottom line is, it will come out when it’s ready. I don’t want to put a release date on it yet.”
The developer’s message amounts to a plea for patience. While acknowledging the long wait since the game’s initial announcement, they maintained they had “reasons for announcing the game so early.” The future of Haunted Chocolatier remains uncertain, but the developer’s statements offer a clearer picture of the project’s current status and direction.
