Michigan Residents Face Coverage Disruptions as Insurers Exit Affordable Care Act Marketplace

More than 200,000 Michigan residents will need to find new health insurance coverage after three major carriers announced they are largely withdrawing from the state’s individual health insurance market, a move coinciding with significant premium increases and the expiration of key federal tax credits.

Health Alliance Plan, the insurance arm of Henry Ford Health, Molina Healthcare, and Meridian Health Plan – all with base operations in Detroit – are significantly scaling back their participation in the marketplace established by the 15-year-old Affordable Care Act. The withdrawals come as federal tax credits that provided substantial premium subsidies for middle-income households are set to expire at the end of this year. This loss of subsidies is expected to drive up costs for many consumers, potentially making health insurance unaffordable for some.

The timing of these exits is particularly concerning as open enrollment for 2026 plans begins soon. Individuals currently covered by these plans will receive notices and will need to actively select a new plan during the enrollment period. For more information on navigating the health insurance marketplace, resources are available at HealthCare.gov. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining a stable and affordable health insurance market, especially as health reform debates continue nationally.

Officials have stated they are working to minimize disruption and ensure residents have access to alternative coverage options. The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as they become available.
