Highguard Shifts to 5v5 Mode Amidst Player Criticism

Following a rocky launch and significant player backlash, the free-to-play shooter Highguard has implemented a permanent 5v5 game mode. The move comes just a week after the game initially debuted as a 3v3 experience, signaling a rapid response to community feedback. This shift highlights the challenges facing new game developers in a competitive market where player expectations are high and initial impressions are critical.

Early reports indicated a difficult start for Highguard, with some players labeling it as a “favorite object of hate.” Despite the negative reception, developers expressed surprise and reaffirmed their commitment to the game. According to reports, the team was taken aback by the intensity of the criticism but remains dedicated to improving the player experience.

The introduction of the 5v5 mode is intended to address concerns about team sizes, which were identified as a key issue by players. Kotaku noted that smaller team sizes were a significant problem for the game.

However, the changes haven’t universally appeased critics. Tweakers reported on the initial negative launch, and Gamekings described the gameplay loop as “terribly boring” in a recent review.

The developers are hoping the 5v5 mode will provide a more engaging experience and attract a wider player base. The game’s future remains uncertain as the team continues to address player concerns and refine the gameplay.
