HMD announced plans for a rugged phone in November, and now the company is sharing further details as the device becomes available in select European markets. HMD describes the Terra M as “more than a device,” positioning it as “a fully managed communication ecosystem designed for operational excellence from day one.”

How HMD Terra M is Designed

The HMD Terra M is “specifically designed for professional workers who rely on durable, reliable, and secure connectivity on the job.” This includes personnel in hospitals, construction sites, airports, security teams, and emergency response units, according to a company release. The phone boasts IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810H certifications, and features a 2.8-inch glove-friendly touchscreen, a 2,510 mAh battery, large physical keys, a high-performance loudspeaker, 4G connectivity, and dual SIM/eSIM support with hotspot mode.

The Terra M is offered as a complete managed communications solution, not just a device, combining a durable design with enterprise-ready services that enable organizations to “build communication-centric operations with a single platform.” The company promises the device will receive five years of quarterly security updates. This extended support is increasingly important as businesses prioritize device security and longevity.

Terra M “combines IoT SIM and eSIM connectivity with low costs with professional Push-to-Talk (PTT) over cellular, secure communications, and device management.” Connectivity plans are available through Lyfo, “providing resilient services through intelligent network switching between operators to ensure reliable coverage across borders and in remote or high-risk environments.”

HMD enterprise customers can deploy the Terra M alongside Mobile Device Management solutions from Springdel and SOTI. New specialized partners are expected to be announced soon. PTT services are provided by Zello and Mobile Tornado, offering secure and interoperable group communications with dedicated, programmable, and emergency hardware keys.

The phone is also compatible with Threema for end-to-end encrypted messaging, Joplin for secure note-taking and knowledge management, and OsmAnd for online and offline navigation, prioritizing those operating in disconnected or restricted environments. New Joplin Cloud subscribers can benefit from a 15% discount for the first year with the promo code HMDTERRAM, valid for the next three months. A 30% discount is also available on Threema Work and Threema OnPrem if purchased before the end of April.

This marks HMD’s first foray into a more professional niche, following the company’s series of phones for children.
