Hong Kong Leader Orders Independent Inquiry into Deadly High-Rise Fire
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee has ordered an independent investigation into a devastating high-rise fire that claimed the lives of at least 151 people, and pledged sweeping reforms in the wake of the tragedy. The disaster, which unfolded over several days, has prompted questions about building safety regulations and enforcement in the densely populated city.
The fire erupted on Wednesday, November 26th, at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex, engulfing seven of the building’s eight towers during a major renovation project. Preliminary investigations suggest that the protective netting surrounding the building did not meet fire-retardant standards.
Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately 40 hours, finally extinguishing it in the early hours of Friday, November 29th. The operation involved a team of over 2,000 firefighters. Police began collecting evidence within the buildings on the same day, a process expected to take three to four weeks, and have since completed inspections of four of the seven affected structures.
Authorities have arrested 13 individuals in connection with the fire, including members of the construction company involved in the renovation. Those arrested face charges including manslaughter and offenses related to fraudulent building alterations.
“We need reform, yes. We have identified failures in various stages,” Lee stated during a press conference. “That’s why we need to take serious action to ensure all these loopholes are addressed.” He emphasized his commitment to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
When questioned about his continued leadership in light of the disaster, Lee acknowledged the need for reform but did not directly address the question of his position. “Yes, it’s a tragedy. Yes, it’s a major fire. Yes, we need reform. Yes, we’ve identified failures in the processes. That’s why we need to take it seriously to make sure all these loopholes are fixed,” he said.
Lee also declined to directly comment on the arrest of a former district council member among the suspects, stating, “Criminals who commit crimes must be brought to justice.”
“I want to reiterate that I will not tolerate any crime, especially any crime that seeks to profit from the tragedy we are facing,” Lee added.
